UL508A Control Panel Shop
Custom Control Panels Built for Your Application
Applied Industrial Controls, an MCE company, designs and builds industrial control panels for applications ranging from straightforward machine controls to complex automated systems.
Focus on Your Core Business While AIC Handles the Controls
Working with Applied Industrial Controls for a custom panel allows your team to focus on its core business while AIC handles the design and construction of the control system.
Outsourcing panel fabrication can help relieve an overburdened electrical department, reduce manufacturing and labor demands, manage material requirements, and support project schedules.
What Is a UL508A Panel Shop?
A UL508A panel shop is a production facility trained and certified to build industrial electrical control panels to UL508A requirements.
Applied Industrial Controls works directly with Underwriters Laboratories to audit its panel-building processes.
UL508A applies to industrial control panels rated 600V or less and addresses requirements including enclosure ratings, safety markings, component use, wiring, motor and circuit protection, and conformance with applicable NEC standards.
UL508A certification helps demonstrate that a panel has been designed and constructed using recognized safety and manufacturing standards.

Why Outsource Panel Fabrication?
Panel design and manufacturing involve more than assembling electrical components. Quality, application requirements, technology, component availability, staging, regulatory requirements, and project schedules all affect the finished panel.
AIC provides panel-building expertise for organizations that may not have the personnel, capacity, or specialized knowledge to handle these requirements internally.
Outsourcing panel fabrication can help customers:
- Keep internal employees focused on their core responsibilities
- Reduce internal manufacturing and labor requirements
- Avoid overlooked design or regulatory criteria
- Access current control technology
- Support compliance with codes and standards
- Meet required project deadlines
The Value of UL508A Certification
UL508A identification confirms that an industrial control panel was designed and fabricated in accordance with applicable UL standards.
AIC maintains its certification through ongoing training and audits. The certification covers the controlled design and construction of industrial control panels, including enclosures, control circuits, terminals, cabling, wiring methods, component layout, and documentation.
Control Panel Design Considerations
Effective industrial control panel construction begins with understanding the application and the regulatory requirements that apply to it.
AIC considers factors including:
- Physical characteristics and layout
- Component spacing and wire-bending requirements
- Heating and cooling requirements
- Enclosure space
- Enclosure material
- Environmental and sealing requirements
- Front-panel and faceplate materials
- Supply-conductor selection
- Overcurrent protection
- Motor-overload protection
- Circuit protection
- Panel and motor disconnecting means
- Operator interfaces
- Control selection
- Terminal and cable labeling
- Regulatory codes and standards
- Workplace safety
- Machine and equipment safety
- Labor and material costs
- Application requirements and sequence of operations
AIC Panel Shop Capabilities
Design Support
AIC can review customer schematics and sequence-of-operations documents and provide suggestions aimed at improving performance, efficiency, and cost.
Assorted Inventory
AIC stocks nearly $1 million in control devices, equipment, and panel-fabrication materials to help reduce lead times on custom projects.
In-House Assembly and Testing
AIC assembles and tests panels before shipment as part of its quality-control process. Functional testing and on-site commissioning can also be provided when appropriate.
UL508A Certification
AIC is a UL508A-certified panel shop, and panels are built to applicable industry codes and standards unless specific application requirements dictate otherwise.
Lead-Time Support
AIC works to meet customer-required lead times and offers expedited options when available.
Flexible Delivery
Completed control panels can be shipped to customers throughout the United States and internationally.
Customized Enclosures
AIC uses a Kiesling Perforex CNC Router to move enclosure modifications from CAD to production while reducing the time and manual work required to cut and machine enclosures.

When modification of a standard enclosure is not sufficient, AIC can also provide fully custom NEMA and UL-approved enclosures.
